NEMA vs 332 cabinet bolt patterns?

Postby RunsWithCrouse-Hinds on Tue May 28, 2013 6:56 pm

Is the bolt pattern for a base mount NEMA cabinet the same as a base mount 332/336 cabinet? I'm considering setting up a 336 on a base I'll pour but I want the option to go to NEMA later if I feel so inclined.

Thanks for your insights!

Nema "P" is 44 by 26. I think that is larger than both the 332 and 336. On option would be to size the pad large enough for the "P" but keep the conduit within the 332 footprint. If you cast extender nuts in place, you could switch real easy.

When we replaced NEMA type cabinets with 332s, we had a steel extender box built that set on top of the foundation, then mounted the 332 cabinet on top of that. The box was about six inches in height...

Assuming the pad is big enough and the conduits are in the right place, we used to just hacksaw off the Hilti bolts, tap them down in the hole and redrill.

We are discussing a back yard project? You might find many innovative ways to use existing bolts to hold the cabinet down.

I was afraid they wouldn't match. I may size it for a 336, then if I find a NEMA then I'll use some hilti bolts or make an adapter plate of some sort.

I like the extender nut idea...might consider doing that! Just have to use shallower bolts to mount the cabinet but then again if a car hits it in my back yard I've got MUCH bigger problems than my bolts being shallow...

OR... (playing devil's advocate, sorta) ...for a back yard project, does one truly NEED to bolt the cabinet down?? Most I've seen (incl my small Econolite) appear plenty heavy enough to sit in one place by themselves without blowing away in the wind...?? Just a thought...

I had thought of that too. I might just use some pavers and set it down with some conduit sticking up in the middle.

Hiya!

We set our old Eagle controller box on the deck under a workbench. Didn't bolt it down but do have the conduit coming through the deck into the box.

Cheers!
