Tornoto Signals

Postby notMUTCDcompliant on Wed Dec 08, 2010 8:40 pm

Was just in toronto for about 24 hours on business.... There signals are great! I know they all kinda look the same with the LED retro's in them, but they are all very clean and nice looking... what controllers are they using?? Most intersections had very small boxes, though I did spot one or two Big boxes... and I think the signal outside of the Hockey Hall Of Fame still has an advanced flashing green? Only saw 12-8-8's Direction shown has an advanced green I think

12-8-8 with big yellow back plates just look cool!

Love "Three Phase Signal" Americans would just be ?????

Some of the very few 12-12-12's I saw, beside left's Love that transits are not only green signals, 8" signals, Dual Signals, but also 8" Green Arrows!
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&channel=s&hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=hockey+hall+of+fame&fb=1&gl=us&hq=hockey+hall+of+fame&cid=0,0,18348671405043441163&ei=3zAATazGJ8GclgeX6bzPCA&oi=local_result&ved=0CDwQnwIwAQ&ll=43.642722,-79.393859&spn=0.010326,0.01678&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.642694,-79.393956&panoid=dYaca_L3-w5vF8SAIkmKww&cbp=12,4.65,,0,15.13

Mid Block Ped Signals with 3m Greens for only one direction... signal wasn't all that close to the last intersection.
These look fairly new! No they are not McCraps!
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&channel=s&hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=hockey+hall+of+fame&fb=1&gl=us&hq=hockey+hall+of+fame&cid=0,0,18348671405043441163&ei=3zAATazGJ8GclgeX6bzPCA&oi=local_result&ved=0CDwQnwIwAQ&ll=43.65463,-79.38019&spn=0.010324,0.01678&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.654722,-79.380232&panoid=y1DztJli3TyCy6opX6623g&cbp=12,359.22,,0,-8.37

This intersection was not under construction when I walked thru, but these 3m 8" greens were still there!

Cool pics, especially like the 3M stuff still out there!

The tall skinny cabinets look like the ones I saw this summer while in Colorado Springs, CO. I forget the number for that particular cabinet (i.e. 337 or whatever), but I'm pretty sure it's a cabinet that houses a 170 or possibly 2070 controller, meaning all the components are pretty shallow and rack-mounted. Back in the 'Springs they had those even on big 8 phase intersections (though the newer intersections had 332 cabinets), so evidently you can fit at least a few loop detectors in there. Most places shifted to 332 cabinets or larger when they started adding video detection, surveillance, etc.

Also, one of those map images (the third one maybe, I forget?) looks more like a small NEMA cabinet at the intersection, like a G size, which is interesting. It's possible that they're using both types, depending on when the installation was, well, installed.

A foot and a half is about right, since 170 controllers are 19" rackmount units.

Those cabinets are very old. You can usually find them at intersections that are fixed time, or like this one, a mid-block crossing. These typically housed the old Crouse-Hinds blue controllers (model # escapes me) with the thumbwheel switches. Any newer cabinet will house a whole host of things and various types of controllers. We use Econolite and Eagle mostly. I remember I was in the shop the day they were testing out the new M50. I knwo Fortran just merged with McCain, and McCain signals have been popping up around the city so I would assume in any new cabinet you may also nwo find a McCain controller. Those old slim cabinets are dissapearing as the intersection is upgraded with a newer controller. But for now if it still works and doesn't need any extra equpitment they just leave them alone

Those CH controllers would be the DM-200, the "baby brother" of the DM series, which also included a 400 (4-phase) and 800 (8 phase, double height monster).

YES! It was on the tip of my tounge lol, but ya that is what is usally inside those cabinets. They just fit, so I am thinking the city had a contract with Crouse-Hinds and thus had a cabinet designed to hold thier equiptment. I'll try and ask my grandfather if he remembers

Did you see the "scramble" intersection that allows pedestrians to cross the street in all directions, even diagonally?
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.
