I needed another project...and I got one!!

I brought home Joe C's Type D four way today. I was lucky enough to make it out when the snow was just starting to cause a traffic headache. Now we have about 6 inches down and theres no let-up!

The light's is in great physical shape, with some corrosion and spotting. The only problem is its a hodgepodge of parts.....glass and aluminum, mostly D, some DT parts, different size screws. Mostly the Smileys, some Eagles and an Econolite lens. :panic: It has an ID tag that I'm attempting to strip the paint off. The visors were in rough shape so I left them at Joes and will have Steve make 12 new cutaways. Steve if you're reading this...heads up!

I couldn't wait to start tackling this one, so here is some pics of when I got it home and some preliminary work:

This will be powdercoated in federal yellow ("Corvette Yellow" is the actual color name) with the ID tag painted black with silver letters. Despite everyones disappointment, this thing will not be bucket mounted!!

Wise choice just to get new repro visors. To media blast the old ones would warp them and then they would need to be straightened before powder coating.

Is it safe to say that there won't be anyone playing billiards at your house for a while?? ;)

Thanks guys! I needed a real restoration again...haven't had one I've gotten down and dirty with a signal refurb since my Type M four way. That has been finished for 6 years now.

Folks are dead set against me drilling into the ceiling but hoping they change their mind when they see the shiny yellow finish!

There is an ID tag I plan on painting black with silver letters...I'll look up the tag restoration threads for more info on that.

Steve, look for a PM shortly!!

If I remember correctly, you have a ceiling tile ceiling in the basement, correct? They wouldn't let you just remove one tile and hang it from a joist? You could even get a new tile and cut it in half and put a hole in the right spot for the hanger and it would look really good! Then when you move out, put the old tile back and no one will ever know anything was different!

I agree with Jerry, this seems like an easy issue to resolve.

I'm going to bet that we see it hanging when the restoration is complete. Good luck, I think we are all on your side on this one. :good: :good:

Nick, thanks for sharing your project - this is the kind of stuff the forum is best for. I wonder how it would look to have tunnels on one side, rather than one level...

Thanks guys! :hello: Jerry, I was going to hang it exactly how you mentioned. Joe added a pipe that extends downward from the hanger about 6 inches which would clear the tiles. I am hoping they will change their mind about it when they see the freshly painted signal. I didn't think about getting another tile to replace the one I cut...that is an idea that might sell!

Question on powdercoating though...do you think that the signal should be disassembled into four faceplates, or can it be powdered as a box? I painted my M with all four plates making the box. And these screws on the D are pretty snug. I can work with them more to get the plates apart but if it can be powdered as a box frame that would be easier.
