And check out the flashing lights in the pavement here along with the 4-way beacon overhead.

The Acme at the lower right corner here on Sandy Boulevard and 28th Avenue has been covered likely pending removal. The Detroit-style overhead signals were never common in Portland and were likely removed by the early 1960s.

Wow, that cluster has plenty of stem length. Must have been a clearance issue with the trolley lines.

It's taken awhile but here's some more!

Acmes at 50th & Foster Road; 1937

Acmes downtown at 6th and Alder; facing north on 6th. This scene is unrecognizable today as you can see here

NE 13th & Holladay; 1960 - Holladay Street now carries MAX light rail in the westbound direction and is an eastbound one-way for cars but you can still see this intersection here.

And finally some cluster action facing north on 10th at West Burnside in 1939. 10th Avenue is now a one-way heading north and the Wentworth & Irwin car dealership at left is now legendary Powell's Books. Modern Street View here

The signal in the island that is nearest to but facing away from the photographer in this photo appears to be a Crouse-Hinds art deco, certainly a Type D but the photo was taken in 1939. When did the Type D go on sale because it appears brand new in the picture (as does the concrete).

http://vintageportland.files.wordpress. ... t-1939.jpg

Now, in case you were curious (spoiler: The D is long gone): https://maps.google.com/maps?q=100+SW+1 ... 4,,0,-0.93

Those aren't flashing lights, those are "pavement signals". For the most part they weren't electrified (except for a very few models) and instead had a reflector(s) to catch the oncoming vehicle's headlights.

You can see more about these here:

There are more, but you get the idea.
