Where is that super smart wiring guru?

Postby signalstand on Sun Nov 16, 2008 2:42 pm

I need some help. On this outdoor setup I have,

I would like it to be activated by the crossing button for a select time. I assume I will need a transformer to feed the ped button with 24 volts, a relay of some kind and/or a set of contacts and a timing device of some sort. My goal is to push the button and have the controller run for 5 minutes and then shut off until the button is pressed again.

Can anyone help me with a parts list and a wiring diagram?

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

Just a quick question-Do you want the entire setup to shut down after the preset period?

Are you sure you need only 24V in that ped button? As far as I know, I doubt it would hurt to have higher voltage, but then again I've never tried it.

Regardless, I think what you'll need is something called a time delay relay. Someone else might have a more specific example of one to look for, but in general if you find one with the ability to time 5 minutes you should be fine. For that matter, you could even get something like an old Eagle microflex timer and just leave the time interval set to 5 minutes (microflex timers are basically like industrial strength kitchen timers).

yes. I was planning on cutting power to the entire cabinet. i. e. before L1 hits the board.

Just in case this makes any difference, this is the controller I now have outside.

There should be room in this cabinet to add my components. I did add a power disconnect switch on the door so currently I need to open the door to power up the controller so I would like to break the circuit between this switch and where L1 hits the backpanel.

Hey Steve,

Actually that should be pretty easy to put together. All you'll need is a small transformer to knock the voltage down to 12 or 24 volts to control the relay and a delay-on-release relay that opens and closes the hot power line coming into the box. I would recommend that you use the lower 12 or 24 volts to go through the ped button for safety reasons. Ya wouldn't want to get zapped by 110 volts if there was a problem with the ped button.

I'll try to get a simple schematic drawn up and emailed to you tomorrow as well as a parts list and suggested source for the parts.
