Does anyone know if this company went on to build these controllers? Also links to full size shots of book.

Just got my copy via interlibrary loan yesterday.

Spoiler:
One of the things I love about the university system!

It's about the size of a decent-length children's picture book, so I should be able to scan it. Not likely that anyone is going to come after me for copyright violations for that kind of a random book.

I've never looked in this part of the forum before, and on the day I have this thread is here!

Yeah, Mike Ashworth posts some very interesting stuff on his Flikr. There are pictures in that book (I think its that one anyway) of some junctions here in Liverpool, as well as sites in Holland and other countries.

I'm certain some of the earlier ATE installed stuff was in fact from the US, which is why there have been cases of CH signals being found over here (as two way <-> heads instead of four way). Here's an example, it appears.

As you probably gathered from SABRE, ATE/Plessey's Strowger works in Liverpool was where they made traffic signals (as well as a whole host of other equipment).

I never was able to find out where the X5 (not an assumption, as much as some imply) control system was built either :glare:

Is there a thread that discusses, on a high level, how actuation is implemented in an electromechanical controller? I would think it would require multiple cam shafts, no?

I have tossed the basics around at times. Only one cam, so the sequence of indications doesn't change. Think of a controller cycling around in a basic two phase intersection with ped indications. Now stop the dial at the end of the main street walk interval, and wait for a side street veh or ped call. When the veh or ped comes by, start the dial and it will cycle to the side, serve the veh/ped and around to the stopping point.

That works in an intersection that isn't coordinated (because the dial stops). If coordinated, then plan "B" is used. Same intersection and controller but now instead of stopping the dial, you let it continue but open the release key circuit so that the keys won't advance the cam. The dial will cycle around, keeping in sync with the offset master, but the signals won't be changing. When the veh or ped comes by, close the circuit, let the keys advance the cam to serve the veh/ped.

We did this with our EF20 controllers in the past but currently no longer are running any actuated ones (just fixed time). I imagine CH, Econolite, Marbelite etc., all work about the same.

Thanks Joe! How would a left turn signal be actuated? I would think that if there's no need for the phase, you'd need to cycle the cam through it without actually cycling the left turn indications.
