Traffic & cycle safety schools in Australia

Postby That Aldridge Guy on Sun Oct 21, 2012 1:23 am

Not far from the neighbourhood I live in, is the Tea Tree Gully traffic safety school. The school, which opened in October 1981 housed a wide assortment of different types of signals, signs and lights. Most were older decommissioned signals and signs but some were also quite new. These pics were taken in January 2011, just after the signals & poles were given a fresh coat of paint!

And on December 9 2004, I went to the SAPOL Road Safety Centre on Port Road, which was 40 years old and also had older signals too. It is now replaced by a newer one further down due to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital project. I've only been there once and those signals would've been collectors items.

That's all for now!

The safety school looks like a one stop shop to check out all of the different signals and signs! Nice pics!

I don't think we have any driving schools around here with signals. All they have is classroom, then you jump in car and face real signals and get to experience other idiot drivers.

What are the POLES for??

Correct, the red and white poles are for school crossings. Each state seems to have it's own ideas on what to do with them. South Australia, where Ryan is, had the diagonally mounted alternating flashing amber lights when the crossing is in use - and a 25km/h speed limit applies. In Victoria, those same lights, but on a plain pole are for a regular pedestrian crossing (similar to the British Zebra crossing). School crossings in Victoria have wooden red and white poles with bright red CHILDREN CROSSING flags displayed when the crossing is in use. A supervisor with a STOP sign is usually seen at these too (and in other states). On busier roads regular traffic and pedestrian signals are mounted on the red and white poles. Other states have variations on the same idea.
