Local signal hunt

Postby freebrickproductions on Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:37 pm

First, I went to the square-door Econolight bullseyes and Eagle(Siemens) traffic light at Church Street and Pratt Avenue.

I went to Clinton Street and South Memorial Parkway next to see the flashing yellow arrow traffic light they installed there. It is the only flashing yellow arrow traffic light in Huntsville that I know of currently.

I also found out that there is a McCain/Peek fraken-signal at the intersection.

Next was Lincoln Street and Eustis Avenue to take a look at the signals with cut-away visors there. As it turns out, the said signals are Crouse-hinds!
Which makes these signals somewhat rarities considering how uncommon signals withough backgrounds and signals with cut-away visors are here in Huntsville.

After that, I went to the intersection of McClung Avenue, Williams Avenue, Echols Avenue, and Adams street to photograph the traffic light that has two red lights there. This intersection has to be one of the most interesting intersections in Huntsville.

After all of that, I went over to the intersection Adams Street and Lowe Avenue to take a look at a bouncing ball beacon cluster. Long story short, I think I may have found the only LFE Automatic-signal beacons in Huntsville.

On my way back to the car, I noticed some Winkomatic Pedestrian Signals at an intersection. These are located at Franklin Street and Gates Avenue.

I am a railfan, signalfan, and I'm interested in tornado sirens. I hope to learn new things about traffic lights because I'm interested in them and don't know much about them.

Great photos. I wish others had managed to replicate the Type R paint quality. Here's another example of one that looks like it might be on its original 30+ year old paint job and it STILL looks great.

These pictures deserve more recognition. Thank you for taking these pictures. :good:

I am digging those Winko-Matic pedestrian signal housings. Makes me wonder if those originally used only "DONT" and "WALK" lenses at one time or another. Ones that I recall that used that set-up from Winko-Matic had visors attached to the housings.

Cool pics. I do find it rather odd that they seem to use backplates that aren't attached to the sides of the signal heads, instead they're attached to the back of the heads. Definitely something different.

As I recall, they (the winko-matics) had Walk/Don't Walk lenses until late 2012/early 2013.

That is strange....considering the signals have machined points for mounting a proper backplate. This looks like they took the cheap route by using sign blanks and drilling into the back housing. That could create a water intrusion problem

I'm pretty sure that IS what they do actually...

I imagine they probably just use self tapping screws...I can't imagine the water intrusion would be bad enough to worry about -- no worse than riveting on a regular backplate, especially considering that the rivet may not fill the entire hole perfectly, whereas a self tapping screw only occupies the space that it drills out as it's installed.

I mentioned the water intrusion thing because, correct me if I'm wrong, standard backplate mounts have the machined holes on the edges of the signal's housing, not affecting the internal components of the signal itself. Most new housings are just hardware fitted into pre-molded areas of the housing. Drilling into the back of the signal seems like it may get water inside the signal over time, unless they put sealant around the drilled area.

Since water flows down, How do you think it is going to get out....... :Phil:
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.
