New to the group from Michigan

Postby eagleyes on Sun Jul 08, 2012 11:01 pm

Hi. My name is Eric and I've always been interested in signals. I live in the Redford Township (just outside of Detroit.) It surprises me how many people think the same way I do. As my handle implies, I have a collection of Eagle Signals, a Crouse Hinds type M vehicle and pedestrian signal, and an old electro-mechanical controller cobbled together from spare parts. The Eagles are 2-8" Eagleluxes, 2 Eagle rodded flatbacks, 8 Eagle flatbacks, and numerous 4-Eagle flatback pedestrian signals. (I guess I wanted the capacity to actually signalize a real intersection.) It's nice to no longer be the only kid on the block with such a weird hobby.

:welcome: :hello: :welcome:
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Welcome Eric!

I lived the first 4 years of my life in Redford - north of 5 Mile between Inkster and Beech Daily. (Back in the mid-70's.) ... and then the rest of my childhood was a few miles away in Livonia.

Thanks for the welcome. That cobbled controller I was talking about consists of an Eagle cycle unit, an old HT 92 flasher, an industrial camswitch with reprogrammable plastic lobes, and a bunch of relays. Basically, I can duplicate the function of most intersections using this Frankenstein setup, and when I was much younger, used extraordinarily poor judgement by putting a fully functional setup on my front lawn (more than once!) The neighbors got a good show and so did the local police and building inspector. I won't tell you what nearly happened to a school bus! Signals on side streets don't mix! My signals are no longer on public display. (Kudos to the good people at Carrier & Gable who assisted me with my rinky dink setup!)

If I was a few IQ points higher, I'd try to post some grainy pictures of my misspent youth. Thomas Edison would have been proud.

Say, I'd like more info on the upcoming August event. Sounds like a blast!

Welcome Eric! I'm on the outskirts of the Detroit region in Shelby Twp. I would definitely recommend attending the meetup next month. We hang, talk signals, trade parts, see the various collections (mine included) and visit some of the unique intersections in the area, among other cool things to do. We got a great bunch of guys from all around metro Detroit! Your setup sounds pretty cool...I'm a sucker for Eagle stuff myself, and re-creating intersections! Also, very cool that Carrier and Gable helped you along the way. They are a great distributor thats more than willing to help with collectors!
