Germany had in the 1950s ped signals with "Warte" and "Gehe" like "Don't Walk" and "Walk" as 3 aspect signals: on top a white walking man (like the Western German man), in the middle red "Warte" and last but not least a green "Gehe".

Actually everything like that is gone! I have a set of masks in my collection that was hard to find.

Another example is Denmark: in some cities remained ped signals with "vent" and "gå". It is similar to Wait and Walk.

But I bet those are already gone :rob:

Australia has used worded pedestrian signal in the past. Some survive, but their days are numbered.

Here's an Eagle text ped signal in Melbourne, Victoria. The photo was taken last year, but the whole intersection was recently "upgraded" with LED signals on new poles. I've not seen the upgrade, but know a signal maintainer who keeps tabs on these things.

Similar to US ped signals other than the word WALK being in green.

Also we had neon ped signals, although the few survivors have all been replaced recently - with one exception - and that's due to go soon.

This neon in Melbourne is believed to be the sole survivor still on the street. A contract to upgrade the intersection went out recently, so it won't be there much longer.

And here's one of the same types of neon ped lantern (by Eagle Signals of Australia) showing the green WALK aspect.

This is true. For those of us not on the North American continent, y'all are overseas too.

However, as we're aware that this forum is based in the USA, I feel sure that we can cope with the fact that we come under the "Overseas" or "international" category here. :yes:

You certainly have a huge variety of traffic and ped signals compared to other countries and just when I think I've seen them all, another photo or old advert on eBay turns up with a type I'd not known about before. This time it was the Crouse Hinds horizontal neon that I hadn't seen before. Red DON'T and green WALK together? Certainly different. :cool:

In the UK, we had the following lens sets:

Don't Cross
Cross Now

Wait
Cross

Both sets were available in red/white or red/green. Some places just had the cross indications in single aspect lanterns.

Approximately when were the last of these signals taken out? Are the "ALT - AVANTI's" in Italy still around? Here in the US, there are some states that have no more worded peds, and some where they are common.

In the UK, all our pre-Mellor signals were gone by 2001, and the worded pedestrians were more than likely to have all gone by the 80s - I don't think the pedestrian-only signal concept had a great deal of time to take off outside of major city centres before the symbols came into force.

I've just found this image of an old Liverpool installation, just outside Lime Street Railway Station.

A tin signals installation with the old white push buttons, however using Mellor pedestrian signals (in the foreground). The Mellor lanterns would likely have replaced worded pedestrian heads. I think this process probably took place at a lot of installations.

And here's an old experimental crossing using a combination of symbols and words in a Neon assembly that was built by SGE (Siemens General Electric) where the neon 'walk' figure was animated! Sadly, they never took off and the trial sites were scrapped not long after installation.

This page on CBRD is well worth a read through - it's got animated diagrams of the old crossing types, complete with user-triggered phases!
