It's painting season...

...so it's time to take advantage of it until it becomes 100º and humid out. This year I need to repaint a lot (most) of the signals outside. Some just need a quick sand and respray with clear while others need taken down, ripped apart and restored. The poles and hardware are all going to get a once-over as well. The ones needing a full restore are the 12" Alusig, 12-8-8 LFE, 9" Singer ped and the streetlight on the mast pole. I started a few bits and pieces last weekend, and this past weekend started the Singer ped.

More info and pictures are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/macsignals ... 81/detail/

Everything gets at least two or three coats of primer, one coat of aluminum primer for those signals I get down to the metal followed by two coats of regular red primer. The paint will go on in two or three coats, then dry for at least 24 hours. Finally they all get two coats of the appropriate (gloss/satin) clear coat. Hopefully with all of this I'll combat the sun on the finish and the crappy aluminum under the paint on some of these signals.

As for the 12-8-8 LFE I need some opinions. Should I leave it all yellow as it is or paint it to match its pole-mate Durasig? Here's a pic:

Got some more pics up tonight, the Singer ped is done just needs assembled. I jumped right from it into the three 16" peds, the L.A ICC I had outback with faded paint on the body and chipping paint (oxidized aluminum) on the door; and the incandescent McCain and LED ICC I picked up from OSM. The L.A ICC is painted, just needs some sanding, touchups and finally clear coated. The McCain is an easy restore since the plastic door/louver slips right off and it's in good shape, it's going to be yellow with the black plastic louver. The ICC is a mess but it'll get done, I'm going to paint it gloss black with the countdown module I bought from Jay at OSM. Here's the photo album with progress pics:

The 12" Flatback and 12" Alusig are next in line after the 16" peds, the Flatback likely getting done in place while the Alusig has to come down. I might add a 9" Eagle ped to that setup after I get it fixed up.

I had an idea for a new pole display out back as well. I grabbed a scrap of 4" sch. 80 PVC from a commercial service job at work a month or so back. I have an Econolite Long Groove, a Short Groove in need of visors and guts (LEDs will do the job fine), and two Short Groove peds from Tacoma Joe. I was going to plant a wood 4X4 with just the peds but now I'm thinking of using the 4" PVC (reinforced somehow or another) with either a slip fitter or pole arms for an Econolite display. More to come on that...
