Canadian Pedestrain Signal Question

Postby Stationary Engineer on Mon Nov 22, 2010 11:49 am

So living in Detroit, so close to Canada, I know they have had the HAND / Walking Man longer than we have. Theirs doesn't quite look as  to me because I did not see what signals they had before. I was wondering if anyone knew the history on those signals and when the long-stride man appeared. I saw at an antique shop out in the country there in Canada some old pedestrian signals, (I think they were poly though) for sale a few years back. I found the shop via google maps and was able to make a call over there. The shop keeper says he has one left and he will sell it to me for 50 dollars Canadian. I was thinking about picking it up.. anyone else have one of these signals? lll be sure to post pics when I get it. :hello:

I have a poly 12" Econolite Canadian ped signal. I got it off Ebay a while ago.

So I get to the store and the guy is like..

" Just in time guy.....I gave you the wrong price.. 50 is for the wired up ones I had, the ones that I didn't wire were 30.. so I wired this one up for you today with a switch off of one of the 3 piece lights"... so I kinda stare at the signal and how he just had drilled 2 fresh holes in the poly and mounted this junk junction box and switches to the back.. ugh.

I guess Its not THAT big of a deal, I mean you don't look at that side and it is just for display, but it was like, he did me no favor there....

I forgot to write down the name of the brand, maybe you folks can ID it.. Its at my office. The hand lens is a bit faded, nothing paint couldn't fix, but is it better to just leave these things alone for authenticity? Has anyone else here touched up poly lenses or glass lenses? I have seen chineese arrows and things for sale on
Spoiler:
:ebay:
that were terribly faded and was wondering if those can be fixed up without hurting their value.

That is a FORTRAN head. I have one, they are pretty much everywhere around here, or used to be until they were all converted to LED countdowns. (yes, we have round countdowns)

FORTRAN makes a really nice signal, and $30 is a great deal. In terms of paiting the lens, I am not sure. I have a set of those Lexan lens' in my poly LFE and they are faded, I've toyed with the paint idea but never tried it.

The set in my FORTRAN are really close to new and didn't have any faded/worn spots
