Nice crunch - Controller Cabinet

Postby TacomaJoe on Mon Jun 25, 2012 3:14 pm

I was in the middle of putting a report together for wire theft and other damage when I got the call for this one.

The report said the cabinet was totalled but I hadn't gotten any reports of trouble there (S 8th & Pearl). Cabinet was running fine when I arrived. Caved the back corner in pretty bad but that's all empty space. The only damage being that when the controller was knocked off the shelf, it broke the phase 8 vehicle switch on the door panel, and broke the RS-232 cap (comm connection on side of 390). The loadbay panel popped off the mounts but wasn't damaged. Side panels are good and no cables were damaged.

It will run like this until I can get a replacement wired up.

And the numbers I was working on. 2011 wire theft $151K, $41K so far in 2012. Damage besides theft for 2011-12 is $263K but we recovered $107K. These numbers don't include this cabinet and the two streetlight poles knocked down over the weekend.

Interesting numbers! Do you guys happen to get a lot more damage calls after the weekends and especially after holidays where people tend to drink?

The MISSING part of the story would be what the offending vehicle looked like after this altercation...
and/or which one would ultimately have the larger repair bill... :Phil:

Resurrecting an old thread for an update. This cabinet's last day of service is today, tomorrow the crew will swap it out. I'll try to get some action shots.

6 months? Oh well, the damaged cabinet still looked lockable and pretty weatherproof.

A tarp usually works well in that situation! ;)

We've had tarped cabinets out there that needed to be retarped because the UVs ate the tarp up.

The damaged cabinet was swapped out. Took a look at it and it's not so bad. The cabinet shell is toast, but the only real damage to the guts is to the phase 6 and phase 8 ped test switches.

I think the controller was knocked off the shelf and hit the switch panel. A couple of switches and a new shell and this will be back on the street.

Got the swap out shots, old one on the ground, new one on the truck

Our method is to stick a couple of 4X4 on the base to protect the cables, keeping the cabinet above the anchor bolts
Image

Drop the cabinet on top, pull the cables out the door and pull the 4X4s out
Image

Back at the shop, the guts have moved to an empty cabinet (old guts removed)
Image

Some assembly required, rail dimensions are sometimes different, a little fabrication to make things work.

Old cabinet is now headed for metal bin.
