When things are just right..

Was working down in my basement in my cabinet (trying to figure out a special programming option for the ASC/2S) and after I was finished, and about to call it a night, I heard an odd "tzzzt" "tzzzt" sound. It was happening about every half-second, and wasn't coming from inside the cabinet. Walked around, trying to find the source. (Worried it may have been the new water heater, water softener, or furnace..!) but it was definitely coming from the cabinet area. After some close leaning in and listening..

The sound was coming from my ASC/2, which was sitting on TOP of the cabinet (along with a lot of other stuff), unplugged.

As far as I can figure, the flasher relays, energized, was putting in enough undetectable vibration in the cabinet, and the ASC/2 was sitting *just right* to amplify the vibrations and make it audible. When I touched the controller, it would stop. I accidentally moved it, and the noises stopped permanently.

Just found it curious how those powered relays affect the cabinet in general.

My relays don't hum unless there is no load connected to them. I pulled a relay out for this reason. Do you have relays in for phases that aren't being used?

For example if your only running 2 or 3 switchpacks and have 6 relays installed in that could cause some vibration

I get that at work at lot when I bolt a cabinet I'm building to an un-level part of the bench. It's not usually a big vibration, but when those relays are powered up, the cabinet does have a soft hum to it.

I usually just flip the flash switch and it goes away

It could also be the contactor. I know I had one controller that made an awful noise, and it had a bad contactor.

Nah - that was part of the thing - everything is *dead* silent normally. The vibration was so slight that I couldn't feel it, but could hear it amplified through the metal parts on the unused controller. :)

Otherwise, you can't heat a hum from them.(*)

(*) Usually - occasionally I have noticed, while workign in teh basement, a hum will start, grow in intensity over 5 seconds or so, and then fade back to silence, again over 5 seconds or so. Happens very very rarely, and I havent' worried about it.

Your comment about using switchpacks (load switches) did make me wonder, tho - I still have problems with my flashers. I have a 16-phase backpanel, which has two sockets for flashers. With one in, it works fine. However, with a second one in, the flashing goes horribly erratic. I'm wondering now if that's because I don't have ENOUGH signals connected up..! (I'm pretty confident it's NOT the flashers, as I've tried all the possible combinations with 5 different flashers, of different makes and models.)

Ah - along with the off rising and falling hum, I will get this occasionally. However, it usually fades out after a few minutes. I never thought otherwise to have them flip on/off to get them to quiet down. :)
