Yet another DT restore

Postby mnence1 on Sun Feb 24, 2013 12:56 pm

Since everyone else has been doing DT restores I figured it was about time to get started on mine. Although I have to admit my progress is much slower than most on here, what takes some people weeks to do takes me months! But none the less I have completed painting of my signal and wanted to show off the progress thus far and see what everyone thinks. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of the signal when I purchased it but it was definitely a good candidate for a restore. Horrible brushed on paint job, broken reflector, bent up visors, and a bunch of holes drilled all over the body and bottom end piece. Had it blasted, filled and sanded the holes with JB weld and got on with the priming. I did all the painting myself with inexpensive HVLP spray guns and my 33 gal compressor.

Primed and ready to go.

On with the yellow! I used Rustoleum safety yellow enamel on this signal, which is a little to light colored for a signal in my opinion. To remedy this I mixed in a bottle of Testors model master orange enamel to produce the more signal appropriate color.

And the finished painted body minus visors.

And with the original visors. Thanks to Steve T. for re-rolling these and bringing them back to life!

I still have to clean off all of the reflector frames, and other misc. parts before it all goes back together. But I'm very happy with the results so far, not bad for my first restore paint job. Once all back together I will post some pics of her up and running in the intersection.

Man this is looking good. I've said it in the past and will continue to say, I can't get enough CH.
I see you have a couple different sprayers there and on my journeys yesterday I ran across a Huskey sprayer yesterday at Home depot for $37. on clearance. Is Husky a good brand of sprayer or will I get a discount disappointment like Harbor Freight?
Again I'm slowly getting off topic but Beautiful signal, I love the color.

I think it is less about the gun and more about the prep work and the way you use it. Certainly better guns will get a better, more even spray pattern. I bought mine off ebay years ago as a kit, think it cost somewhere in the range of 80 bucks. I would put them in the harbor freight category of HVLP guns but they seem to work pretty well. The blue gun you see is for priming with a 2mm tip, the red gun for finish spraying with a 1.4mm tip, and I also have a smaller detail gun with a 1mm tip for touch up work. I also used my Badger airbrush for those small oopsies that occurred while handling parts.
