Those are gone, now. All the ones along Independance Ave (south of the Mall) are gone. :( There is a 3M ped West of there, tho, over near the tide pool - http://goo.gl/maps/sDXzN

That fast? They were there when I was in DC over New Years...

Yup.
All getting replaced. All intersections getting upgraded with new poles and lights.

Wow...what's the likelihood that the neons will "sneak out" of DC, or be put at public auction? I can only imagine how terribly our nation's capital handles their surplus equipment, especially since the capital of Ohio won't even auction it as scrap before they make sure every single item is inoperable... :Phil:

That's a real shame! I love the grey signals and the "stubby" mast arms. How long do you think before all of them get replaced?

Honestly, it will probably be a while - DC is rather large, and very heavily signalized. :)

Awesome! A while is just enough time for me to go down and get some photos of them before they all bite the dust.

  DC signal meet?

They use a very interesting method of replacing everything, too. I haven't seen this done anywhere else -

They will erect 'temporary' signals, masts mounted in large (5-foot round, one foot thick) cement anchors, and wire them up. Then they'll rip out the old masts and signals, put in the new masts and signals, and then re-route the wires up the new masts. The intersection will stay active almost 100% of the time.

Around here they would setup a temp diagonal span with utility poles if they are going to reuse existing underground conduit. I have pics but don't want to clutter up this cool DC thread.
