Vertical rib on the back of the Fire Alarm pedestal signifies that the lantern up top was a gas-light. The gas supply line was routed under that rib to keep it away from the "sparky" contacts of the Fire Alarm Telegraph mechanism that was inside.

Etched markings on the bottom four panels of the red glass lantern were instructions on how to turn in a Fire Alarm -- most likely for the keyless door commonly used in Boston at this time. Bell would ring inside the door when the handle was turned to open the door (false alarm deterrent even back then). Folks would still have to pull the hook on the internal mechanism to actually send the alarm.

Here's a picture of the front of that kind of Boston Fire Alarm Gas-Light pedestal -- from a humorous post card. Note bottle in hand of drunk trying to open the keyless door. --

... Strange. I get a 404 - File Not Found.

I did not know they knew what a '404' was back then.

Cool Shot.

How about this Traffic Cop with his hand-operated "signal" and the zoo around him.

Actually that one is in Joe C's garage, including the skeletal remains of that very traffic cop!
Moderately inspirational message.

I'm in Boston this week and was doing the tourist bit near Quincy Market and saw one of these...was surprised it was a gas light up top. My guess is it has been restored and is not an original installation. Should have taken a picture!

Tech., Thanks for your info on the Fire Alarm. I have many but nothing like that one and wondered what it looked like in front. Glad you have the knowledge and are sharing it.
