Flatback Ped Restoration

Postby 3Mfanatic on Sun Apr 21, 2013 8:17 pm

No sooner had I gotten this Flatback home did I start taking it apart almost immediately after documenting its original condition. Unlike my previous restoration, the CH DT, this signal doesn't really have any patina but rather, a nice even coating of dirt. I'm guessing it was left outside in a puddle for an extended period of time because the whole thing is VERY dirty. There's a fair amount of aluminum corrosion on the inside of the doors, the reflectors are mismatched (one Azlak, the other glass), and the cork gaskets around the sockets are toast. That being said, the lenses are intact and the visors are straight.

My plans for this one are broadly similar to those used on the DT; replace worn parts, new hardware, media blasted and powder coated, this time gloss black.  I'm hoping to have it done and in tandem with the DT by mid-to-late June.

Glass lens is on the bottom, Azlak up top.

I think the original wait lens may have been shattered by a bullet or BB at some point because the lens was neanderthal'd in place with contact tabs and screws that didn't really fit. The original gasket was also missing with just a rubber adhesive strip placed between the door and the front of the lens.

Notice the holes in the WAIT section. These were definitely drilled in and for reasons I cannot fathom.

I didn't notice the holes in my inspection but I did see that the terminal block was missing so he threw in a spare section for free. That spare section will become the new WAIT section, replacing the one with holes.

Fully disassembled and ready for media blasting. This one came apart SO much easier than the DT did.

Stay tuned!! :good:
