I was talking to a Caltrans signal tech last week. He was telling about some natural gas traffic signals that the city of Los Angeles, Ca. used way back when. He said that the city of L.A. tested many types of signals in the old days, but the gas powered one was not one of their better ideas. He said that one of the protos caught fire, and exploded.

I had never heard of a gas powered signals before. I don't think that he was pulling my leg, but you never know! Has anyone else heard of a gas powered signal?

AGA adapted what were essentially railroad signals into the first blockbuster or pedestal mount beacons.

The sign shop is in Brooklyn, the Manna is 15 minutes past my house in Hackensack. An hour wait on Saturdays at the Manna is not uncommon. :( So perhaps some other day...

Besides, you need to build up a tolerance to Manna burgers. Some people's initial reaction to them is, well, 'unsavory'... :dizzy: :hurl:

In the early 1900s NYS had all kinds of weird stuff. When the NYS Department of Public Works took over in 1924 alot of stange signals were removed. No more 2 color signals or GAS type were allowed on state highways. They were given a signal number at first, but then either updated to 3 color signal, flashing electric beacon or not needed and removed.

By the Pelham NY train station was a stone pedestal that use to be a gas light of some type. I do not know if it is still there or not.
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I just found a copy of this book. It's a spiral bound soft cover with a copyright of 1971, but the previous owner (or one of the previous owners) put his name in it with a date of 8/7/82. I didn't realize others here had a copy, or that this book even existed. Looks like an interesting read!
