How? (Missing Signal Question)

Postby 3Mfanatic on Fri Aug 02, 2013 1:51 am

The other day there was a fairly violent accident at the intersection near my house that involved at least two cars, both winding up completely across the street well over 20 feet from each other. I'm presuming there was a third and it was towed away before I rolled through because where the other two were leaves no way to explain how one of the ped signal poles got mowed over. The signal was in conflict flash when I came through and emergency vehicles were there.

My question is this: PBOT (Portland Bureau of Transportation) came by and put a cone over the now-empty pedestrian signal pole base and then closed the crosswalk with signs. Since I'm assuming the sudden loss of the lone pedestrian signal and push button tripped the conflict monitor, how do they tell the controller to keep running with a missing signal until a new one can be installed? Knowing PBOT, this will take about six months. :Phil:

Maybe they taped down the conflict monitor reset button like Jay did at OSM...

I would hope they pulled the loadswitch to those "missing" phases....and left the "tape" fpr the monitor in the truck and didnt go that route!

That was a temp fix until the signal guys get out there and pull the switch packs for the 2 ped phases

Spoiler:
a day or 2 after osm I sat down and found the problem, so no more tape!!!

Since the peds have indications on both sides of the crossing missing one won't affect the monitor. Here in town, I have one ped pedastal that we take down at 7PM and put back up 6AM each night because 130 foot beams need to make the turn. Only thing to look out for is that if the remain ped burns out, an open circuit would trip the monitor when the open (walk) conflicts with another green.

That's the thing I can't work out, Joe. I know that newer PBOT installs do NOT have a police panel but these signals went up in '91 so I may have to go up there and see if this one does. I was wondering if the conflict monitor caught something, threw it into flash and the Jeep that hit the Mercedes wasn't paying attention and blew right through.

If the ped cable shorted a walk and don't walk wire together, or if an active walk gets shorted to ground and blows the loadswitch circuit (steady on) the monitor would put the intersection into flash. The signal was most likely working at the time of the accident. Big time collisions are usually someone blowing a red. My guess is the ped was mowed down during the accident, putting it into flash. PBOT picked up the pieces, cleared the fault and it's business as usual.

Disconnect the missing ped head wires if they are "Home Runs".

Pulling out a switch pack, Taking the ped indication wires off and running a Hot wire to the Red screw works, too.....
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

If you pull out the loadswitch for that PED the monitor will be happy. We had a crew out recently "relamping" all the PED LED modules in one area and they would just open the cabinet, pull the loadswitches and then replace the modules. The controller could still run the vehicle signals and all power was removed from the PEDs so the guys could work without any worry

Works until you get to the MMU in a TS2 cabinet. It needs to see the ped outputs as well.
