The additional neutral wire in the first insert seems unnecessary to me, but that makes me wonder if it perhaps prevented a glitch, in which is still somewhat common to see amongst the second kind of inserts in mainly Manhattan. You know, both the hand and man lit at the same time.

That might have been due to a faulty neutral wire somewhere.

I never seemed to notice the problem in the first one.

Absolutely. It is the the second type of inserts that were most likely to have the problem. Somebody posted photos of a whole cache of signals, scattered around Manhattan on Flickr, with the problematic hand/man lit at the same time.

I wonder if the Dialight signals have the same problem, I saw one along Dreiser Loop & Debs Place in Co-op City. When it changed from the man to the hand, the man symbol flickered for a second, before the hand stopped flashing. It may not be isolated to just the AtLites.

Perhaps.

Though there might be another reason to take into consideration, and the problem might stem to the signal controller. Is it electro-mechanical? If that's the case, then maybe the movement of the cams and shaft causes the cam finger that corresponds to the particular circuit to momentarily close. It might be loose.

I do remember that, prior to when the pedestrian signals in the city were retro-fitted, there were some minor problems amongst them, in which were likely caused by the signal controllers themselves, which were still entirely electro-mechanical in the 1990s.

Always thought these were unique, classic NYC, and I have always been a big-time ped-man, so I joined this club!

Congratulations on the acquisition, Steve. What are your intentions for it? Will it be in a pedestrian signal housing? Or will you display it as-is?

Thanks, Steven. Fortunately, I have an extra Winko-Matic housing in which to place it. Most of the pictures I have seen of these in service show them without a visor or grid on the face, and that is how I plan to display it. Very different than here in So. Cal. where you basically never see peds without the grid to prevent the sun phantom.
