Your favorite "unwarranted" signals

Postby traffictechgreg on Tue Jul 02, 2013 7:27 am

As signal fans we all have favorite intersections that we know could probably get by with just a 2 or 4-way stop. Such signals are sometimes referred to as unwarranted, as expecially in the 50's, 60's and 70's signals were sometimes put up wherever people felt like it without any thought. Looking for your best examples of "unwarranted" signals. Here are my favorites, and I am darn glad that it is hard to get unwarranted signals removed around here:

Here in Upper Darby:

Crouse Hinds model R's in Penn Wynne/ Lower Merion, PA

Re the Penn Wynne one... That was installed I think the story goes because a kid was killed crossing the street there coming from the library. (it's there on the left) The street was also used as a speed cut thru to avoid a lot of city line ave traffic. Now that there is a stop sign at every other cross street, that isn't the case anymore

Here's a couple off the top of my head, I have some pics I can upload later...

7th and Indianola, Columbus OH
If this one hasn't been removed yet, I'm almost sure it will be eventually. I never did figure out why there's two cabinets there, but I'm guessing the EF-20 cabinet was used as a "backup" for the Electro-Matic. The intersection was semi-actuated, and the ped button on the side with the cabinets was mounted to the EF-20, so I was never truly sure if it was actually the Electro-Matic running the show, or if it was the EF-20. I went to the intersection once and I couldn't hear either controller making noise. I don't think the peds had a flashing clearance interval but I can't remember, they almost never changed.

4th and Wyandotte, Columbus OH
I used to live down the street from this one...6 Crouse-Hinds art decos and one new Econolite, with Winko-Matic peds, but only on one side of the side street.

A lot in Kingston NY. Some examples

This one, Main St and Fair St, is my favorite (2 4-section marbelites with 8" arrows, 6 worded incandescent winko peds). It may not be as unwarrented as the others, though, because the arrows help "direct" the 2 one-way streets.

Easy. Old Portland Road & 18th Street in Saint Helens, Oregon.

Totally unnecessary but still the lone incandescent cluster hanging over a very quiet intersection with little traffic, still doing its job untouched as of yesterday. These pictures are from over the winter.

Only one I can think of around here, intersection of a busy-ish street with a very quiet side street. It's got rodded flatbacks on two corners with non-functional crossing ped buttons, I assume originally it was 4 sets of rodded flatbacks.

There's also quite a few "unwarranted" signals down the side streets of Saratoga Springs, NY, often with only one signal face for each direction.
