Tacoma Rebuilt EF

Postby TacomaJoe on Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:40 pm

Long ago, we rebuilt some of our EF backpanels. We used old panels with cloth wire, stripped them down and re-wired the controller with new wire.

We bought the phenolic board and brass ferruls and built the relay/flasher panels for flash and pre-emption.

Gave us some extra life out of the EF cabinets. This one is the only one left that I'm aware of. We just pulled it from S 84th & Yakima this week. Just in time it would appear because there was some arcing at the L1 post because the brass jumper wasn't secure.

I recognize the hand writing on the label for the relay sending the R1 out to Park street as being mine, so I think I'm the one who built this one.

...and this is why periodic scans with thermal imaging cameras are important. It would of caught that long before it failed. But nobody wants to spend the money to do predictive maintenance. It cost too much.

Dug into the records, the cabinet was installed at the intersection 1/9/84, so I must have done the wiring job some time before that.

Many of your post's on similar cabinets, have a paper trail with details on the changes over the years. The records that you and the city have kept over the years are very interesting.

So the city of Tacoma continued to install electro-mechanical signal controllers at that time?

In the 70's we installed a bunch of EF20s. Many were upgrading the existing EA controller and 4-way. Some were new installs like here. The EF that was installed FEB'71 didn't have pre-emption so it was replaced with this rebuilt panel JAN'84. I don't recall any new ones after 1978, but we continue to use some for temporary signals.
