CH "D" 4-way in progress

Postby khardy on Wed Jan 16, 2013 7:19 pm

Hi Folks,

Thought I would share a few photos of the Crouse Hinds "D" 4-way light as it is now and until I return home in about a month.

These are the cabinet and door parts after blasting and the dishwasher....

Looking good. How did you clean the back of the reflectors?

That there is just about the coolest looking thing I've seen in sometime now. Great grouping, the doors look sweet.
I'm counting 12 reflector frames and 16 reflectors, is this a 4 sec. 4 way?

Hi Jason,

We hand washed the reflectors. Some previous owner had spray painted the traffic light without taking it apart and there was a lot of overspray on the reflectors and other parts. Unlike the other components that we could blast or wire wheel, the back of reflectors were spray painted with silver colored paint.

Most of the reflectors have blemishes due to age, water, etc. This is just a quick fix for the areas that have flaked off and to make the backsides look better. We haven't decided whether to get them resilvered or not. If we do, we hope to find a local business that can resilver instead of shipping somewhere.

Cheers!

Hi Vaughn,

Guess you were posting while I was responding to Jason. You have the numbers right from the photos. 12 of the reflectors go with the CH "D" 4-way and the other four go with the CH "DT" art deco light we are redoing at the same time.

Cheers!

O I see. That's a great idea cleaning up the back like that or at least getting the reflectors sprayed. I wasn't sure what to do with my DT and simply washed the reflectors with warm soapy water and reinstalled them. Mine look like donkey and after seeing yours, man there's just no other way besides resilvering.
I haven't looked into it but I could only imagine how much it would cost to resilver a reflector. I'm imagining maybe $25.00 per lens?

Hi Vaughn,

By what I have read via the web, $20-25 seems to be the cost of resilvering each of the reflectors. Some sites state that price per square foot for flat mirrors. There was one business listed on this site, but they are changing owners at this time and not taking orders.

With many of the projects Sondra and I take on, we try to find local businesses for anything we can not do ourselves. One of the good things about residing in a big city like Houston is there are a lot of resources here for restoring things. As I mentioned earlier, we have not decided on resilvering the reflectors. That will depend on several factors such as how well the lights look when they are back together, how much money we have in this near the end, if there is a company locally that can resilver our reflectors or we just say the heck with it and go get them redone. Good chance the last item is what will happen.

Cheers!
