Interesting Flasher

Postby Troy on Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:02 am

So I have this flasher in deco flasher box and was wondering if anyone's seen one like it. I don't think it was made for the CH box, but it fits.
It has the customary electric coils that spin the familiar disc. That disc spins an axel with a gear, that in trun, spins several other gears. Those gears work their way down & spin a captive cam with an off-set hub. That cam, as it spins, rocks a pendulum. The pendulum hold a mercury or tilt switch that as it rocks back and forth, makes the electrical connection lighting and unlighting (or flashing) the light. It works really well. Here's a short cell phone video of it in action.

Anyone have one also or know where it came from / out of?

And a Thanks to TacomaJoe for helping me to get it up & running :hello:

Here's a shot of the mercury contactor that gave me the tilt switch connection.

I think that it is a clever idea to use mercury because I know how badly the contacts get crusted up.

The tilt switch in the pendulum is just a "tilt switch" but I'd like to find me a glass ,old school mercury filled one to work in the pendulum and be able to watch the mercury slosh back and forth.

I think Troy's in mercury filled, just not glass. The mercury contactor that I took the photo of is one I use in my glass to explain how they work. I have mercury but not the means to seal the glass.

Don't a lot of old (well not that old) home thermostats use the same type of mercury switch, you should be able to find one there. Just an idea??

Yes the old thermostats had mercury in them as well as some trunk switches etc., the old pin-ball machines did too. In this case you want higher current capacity. The contactor in my photo is rated at 30 amp.

Here's the box it came in. New paint, re-used the old weatherseal rope, original lock and key and brass hardware all around.
