Hiya Folks,

Since getting the Letter Box, we have had a couple of distractions with Sondra's RR Light setup, digging for old signs and the wheeling and dealing on some old CH lights. We are waiting on parts for the RR setup, hopefully those will arrive tomorrow and getting the CH lights is still two Saturdays away.

So our attention is back on the Letter Box.

Shortly after we acquired the box, we started removing the paint.
Image

We found several coats of the Red, White, Blue with Yellow underneath which may have been some kind of primer and the old Army Green below that and an original primer of red lead on the cast parts.
Image

Image

After removing most of the paint chemically, sandblasted and treated with a rust inhibitor primer.
Image

This cast metal is somewhat porous and even sandblasting did not remove all the red lead.
Image

Image

Two coats of rattle can primer on most of the parts.

Have one piece that we need to drill out the old machine screws and rethread the holes. Hope to do that later today.
We have a high chance of rain the next couple of days, so the parts will be put away which will allow the primer to cure some before putting the Dark Forrest Green paint on prior to assembly.

Cheers!

Hiya Old-timer,

Took several tools to get the box apart so it would fit in the blast box. Most of the screws were rusted in place. Had to delicately cut the square nuts on some bolts with a die grinder and used the sawzall to cut the top door free. The top piece I have to drill out six bolts and retap. Purchased all new slotted flathead machine screws today to replace the old ones.

We plan to mount this box by the front door and use for our mailbox. With Troy's suggestion, we ordered and now have the wing handle latch so the mailman can open the bigger door.

Cheers!

Hiya Folks,

We have a break in the rain so finished drilling out the bolts from the top piece of the letter box.

This is the underside of the top with part of the machine bolts sticking out. During disassembly, had to grind off the bolt heads.

The bolts have been drilled out and holes threaded.

Same done to the ends for attaching the upper door.

So far on this project, I think this has been the most difficult part with making sure the holes drilled were aligned properly. Took about two hours using jigs and clamps to make proper alignments with drill. Everything else has been pretty straight forward on the disassembly.

If all goes well, hope to paint the parts and reassemble this next week.

Cheers!

Hi Folks,

Applied a couple of coats of Dark Forrest Green over the primer on the letter box parts yesterday and this morning.

Plan to get at least 5+ coats of green and about the same for clear coats on each side before assembly. Cast metal is very porus.

Cheers!

Afternoon Folks,

Finished with painting the green on the parts. We decided to paint some of the raised lettering "white" before clear coating and assembly. I would assume back in the 1930's, these letter boxes were painted the army green and left that way. We like the look of the highlighted lettering on our box and so it shall be.

Have three coats of white on the lettering. Will see if it needs another tomorrow before we proceed.

Cheers!
