So what does the occasional zig-zag line pattern on the streets mean, specifically in the UK. Is this indicative of a pedestrian/bird crossing or something else?

My boss is from Wales, but hasn't lived over there in many years. He's not sure, but looking at the picture, he says that double-yellow lines me never any parking. Single yellow lines means parking according to posted signs. The white wavy lines mean no stopping as you'll block the ped crossing.

Used to have the Zig-Zag lines in Australia too - used as an advance warning of a "Zebra crossing".

Edit: Whoops! Should've checked the photo before replying. I was thinking of the zig-zag lines painted down the centre of the lane. Not the ones either side. :blush:

White zig-zags are painted before and after a controlled crossing point. This prohibits stopping (unless for the traffic lights/zebra crossing, obviously) which allows clear lines of sight etc.

Yellow zig-zags are painted across or near school accesses for the same reason as well as preventing school time congestion outside the school.
