Despite this, it seems that some were retro-fitted with such lenses over the years. I was fortunate enough to come across one photograph of a Ruleta, in which was single-faced as well, that apparently once used them. From lower Manhattan. Circa 1958.

Love that picture... Steven, I'm not sure why you think it was NOT originally installed with scripted ped lenses. From my observation (e.g., the picture above), 8" ped signals in NYC had scripted lenses that, in the case of Central Park, were replaced by red/green ball lenses in recent decades.

If I understand correctly, worded pedestrian signals that showed "WAIT" and "WALK" made their debut in the city sometime in the 1950s. Prior to that decade, I have not necessarily came across any photographs that show Ruleta traffic/pedestrian signals equipped with them.

I would like to think that, with regards to the photograph I posted a while back, the pair was installed prior to when the lenses came about in the city of New York.

OK, I get what you're talking about... My assumption has always been that all of the adjustable Ruletas seen in old pictures with red and green lenses are vehicular, not pedestrian. I'm curious if there were any WALK/WAITS in the old days...certainly they were in other cities.

Nice photos! I'm guessing the maintenance people considered this one to be a junkyard dog, not a piece of history!
