Painting over powdercoat?

Postby RunsWithCrouse-Hinds on Fri Jun 28, 2013 12:06 pm

I have a brand new (NOS) slipfitter I'm planning to use on a new setup in the near future, but it's currently powdercoated black, and I would like it to be green instead. What should I do to prep the surface before I paint? It's shiny so I know I need to do something, but I don't know if primer would be enough. I'll be using spray paint for the final finish.

I'd appreciate your advice!

Using a red or green scotch pad until it has a dull look then a coat of non sand primer sealer will do the trick. Using a pad is easier than sand paper on non flat surfaces. :hello:

Spray paint?

Depending on how it's going to be abused/handled/treated...

Any loose, puffed, rust/corrosion under the PC is bad news. That'd have to be scraped off.

Otherwise, for just a slipfitter and with light (indoor) duty, I might just do some light coats of a flat spray paint then follow with color coats.

Otherwise, yeah, sand away!

I agree with Kent. Using the Scotch pad you need to give the paint something to grab hold of.
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.
