Repairing EM Controller Cam Breakout Tab Thingies

Postby RunsWithCrouse-Hinds on Wed Nov 26, 2008 10:59 pm

I decided to do a little "reprogramming" tonight on my Econolite type F controller (back at the parents' house for Thanksgiving and I just kind of got into it). In the process, I managed to break off a tab on one of the circular plastic thingies that control which contacts are on when. This one happened to be the one for the main street yellow light, so I ended up with an interesting sequence with a red-yellow-before-red-before-green indication. I took the cam apart and used one of my spare breakout thingies to replace the messed up one, but I do have the broken piece from the original, and my real question here is, has anyone used glue or epoxy to put tabs back on these things? And what the heck are they called?

Among other things, I ended up adding pedestrian signal indications to my control sequence. They don't do the flashing DW obviously, but they're in the sequence. The controller had the extra step for a :neonwdw: -before- :lenscau: phase, so I just had to set up the sequence.

Anyway, what's the verdict on the glue?

Dan,

I wonder if super glue might work. I've tried it a few times and it's done OK for me so long as the parts fit tightly together.

And I think the thingies you were asking about are called cam lobes.

Gordon, you're probably right.

I'm actually about to start a new post asking all sorts of interesting questions about this controller...I've sort of re-sparked my curiosity about some of its functions...

as someone very experienced with super glue...
It will work for a while. But remember, super glue is brittle, and will eventually break. I would recommend Epoxy, silicone, or contact cement.

Also, you can visit your local hobby shop and get Walthers "goo"

Matt,

I agree that super glue is brittle, but if he's able to get a good tight fit between the two parts it should continue to hold. As for the other ones you mentioned, the problem is that they require a fairly thick layer of adhesive between the parts and tend to cause the finished product out of shape.

I glued in a bunch of lobes on the cam wheels when I got my EF-20 and they held up just fine using epoxy. I also had mine outside and the glue made it through 3 Texas summers. Its a good idea and it doesn't hurt at all

eh... super glue is not always about the tight fit, your think more solvent cements, such as plastic cements. epoxy and super glue are gap fillers.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the infamous 5-minute epoxy? That's fix it right up. I once fixed a ceramic traffic button that was broken in half with 5-minute epoxy, and it's been stepped on, run over, etc, and is still in one piece...

I grabbed some super glue of some kind yesterday and tried it out, and it worked just fine - set up quickly, and seems strong. Almost glued myself together in the process, but I freed myself...

Good job Dan,

Glad to hear it worked and that you didn't get too "attached" to what you were doing!
