A little taste of Central Park

Postby steven1981 on Sat Jul 20, 2013 12:18 am

Lingering below trees and in a rather peaceful part of Manhattan in New York City are various two-section pedestrian signals (red and green) that control crosswalks. Most of these throughout Central Park are old Marbelite heads; however, some are fairly new (likely as replacements).

In regards to signal indications, one would be surprised to see that many still have original glass lenses and incandescent light bulbs. Some are still illuminated, while others are burnt. Additionally, Central Park is perhaps one of a handful of areas in New York City (as a whole) that has a large number of electro-mechanical signal controllers that are still in use. Another gem that comes to mind is the Ruleta pedestal (or "olive" as some people refer to it as), and some remain for likely historical intentions. This is true for some original signal controllers that were manufactured by G.E. as well.

Yesterday, while in Manhattan, I visited Central Park to observe several signalized crosswalks in the area. Below, are the pictures that I took of these. Enjoy them.

Good stuff Steven! I'm amazed that the post has still survived to this day. THey really should convert them back to wait/walk's though. It would be more appropriate I think.
Moderately inspirational message.

They get replaced!!

There is a separate contract just for the slop coat paint job!!!
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Another interesting observation I made at Central Park is the reuse of electro-mechanical signal controllers.

One set-up in particular there originally had a small signal controller cabinet, in which it was similar to a G.E. signal controller cabinet. When I planned what signalized crosswalks I wanted to visit, the set-up in particular had it in service on Google Map (2012). I wanted to see it in person on Thursday, but I realized it was replaced with a reused Marbelite M-30. Interesting to know that the city continues to use them.

There's at least only one set-up that uses today's solid-state signal controller in Central Park, and I think the set-up overall is fairly new.
