Might be time for me to add some photos for viewing. "That Aldridge Guy" has been showing some excellent South Australian signals. Most of my photos are from Victoria, since that's where I live. But shall include some from elsewhere.

Here's some typical Aldridge LED signals outside Melbourne's Arts Centre.



From left to right we have circle (or ball) aspects for through traffic, T aspects for trams, obviously bicycle aspects for the bike lane, and U-turn aspects for service road traffic leaving the arts centre entrance.

If I link to images I have uploaded elsewhere, I'm told that they're too wide. Even though they're the same as the attachments. Very annoying. So I'll need to resize them yet again and try again later.

Hmmm! That seems to work.


In Victoria, with the phasing out of old favourites, there's very little variety in traffic signal varieties in Victoria now. Certainly most LED lanterns are the same - but a few experimental installations exist such as this one not far from VicRoads headquarters with the LEDs arranged in straight lines rather than circles. Also unusual in this state is LED signals that are clear when not lit.

300mm (12") LED signals - the B aspects being for a bus lane. Brisbane, Qld.


When the bus signal is red, it shows a red straight-up arrow. This looks a bit odd beside the normal circle aspect. However, they are aimed in slightly different approach angles.

Vertical in-line 4-aspect signal in Sydney, New South Wales. The lower lamp is a right-turn arrow that only comes on with the green circle / ball aspect. In Victoria, the arrow is always to the left or right of the corresponding circle aspect. The "blackout" stop signs are used at all signalised intersections in NSW. The busier road has priority and has no signs.

More '60s Eagle signals at another Melbourne school crossing This one retaining an embossed target board / backboard. Would've been yellow originally, but hurridly painted black in the '70s. Since replaced with LED signals.


Eagle neon pedestrian signal at yet another Melbourne school crossing. Also since "upgraded" to LED. In May 2011, there were around 20 neon lanterns surviving around Melbourne - they were last installed in the mid 1970s. With a rapid program of converting all signals across the state to LED, today there is only one example in use - or at least it was still there a few months ago.


Old Eagle pedestrian button.


Eagle pedestrian button with CALL RECORDED lit up. I'm sure most of the people pressing the button have no idea what that actually means. Which is why later versions simply said WAIT.
