New to the forum

Postby SCRANE3@MILWPC.COM on Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:34 pm

Greetings,

I am not an owner of traffic signals, but I have faith, I bet I'll set some up one day. Although I am sans of light ownership, I am intrigued also by street lights and RR signals and flashers. Still, I have always loved traffic signals the most. I wonder why different states post or hang the traffic signals differently, why styles of lights different among manufacturers, why some are painted in different colors, etc. Plus, traffic signals can be humorous. Heck, one of the first jokes I ever knew was about a traffic signal. Most of you probably recognize this one:

Q: Why did the traffic signal turn red?
A: You would turn red too if you had to change in the middle of the street.

Groan.

I hope to use this forum to learn about signaling, controllers and reconditioning old signals for display in basements or gardens. Also, I will enjoy hearing about nostalgia and opinions about engineering, manufacturing, and the joy of working with this hobby. I like to see the discussions of better traffic engineering and how signals are keeping up with the "greening" of America.

Howdy Scrane3 and welcome to SignalTraffic. Please do check out the posts in the rest of the forum, but you'll also want to check out signalfan.com. The site's owner (John K.) is also the founder of the signalfan club. That board, while hosted on the troublesome MSN Groups, is substantially more active than this one, so you'll get more bang for your buck there. But please do remember to check in back here occasionally.

Cheers,
Ed T.

Hello and welcome.
Ed is a modest fellow, just remember to keep one eye on him at all times. (He's sneaky like that.)
Signalfan club is OK, just watch out for that Rowdy bunch like 3liteguy, the guy who has the GEO in his screen name and occasionally Ed's step brother. Who irronically is also named Ed. (Go figure)

I guess that's my cue to chime in. :) It's not hard to get a good collection up and running...all you need these days is about fifty thousand bucks and the desire to drive halfway across the U.S. to pick a vintage signal up! (the fifty thousand is for gas.) A good old signal can cost between 300 and a 1000 depending how much legwork you do. If you are really dilligent or you just keep your eyes peeled you can score an oldie cheap (around 100 or so).

Then you can come here or that other signal forum (what was the name of it?) and we can all poke fun and tease you (cause after signals, that's what we do best). And it's all in good fun.

(execept when Ed does it. When Ed does it, it's mean and spiteful and hurts my feelings and I get very injured)
