Got a sign for the first time in months and it is a doozy

An embossed NY 25 cutout shield. One of NY's original state routes, NY 25 runs through the middle and North Shore of Long Island and extends from Manhattan to Orient Point. This sign probably dates between the 30s and early 50s as I believe it was removed in 1956 (the marking says P 5-56 and they soon changed designs). It's in in rough shape and may be missing the backplate and glass reflectors but it's in displayable shape. Spent $60 plus shipping (which wasn't much since the seller was ~30 miles away) which is well under market value for any kind of NY cutout sign.

(This is my 3rd NY 25 sign, the first one is a relatively new one that I ordered from a sign manufacturer and the 2nd is a handpainted Suffolk county made sign from the North Fork that dates to the 70s. One of those two will probably be sold in the near future.)
I think therefore I am...

I was gonna Best Offer it but I decided to pull the trigger since I didn't know if it'd still be there by the time the seller could respond.

I really like the sign, love how relatively smaller it is compared to later signs. Not touching it besides adding catseyes/reflectors and a backplate at some point. It displays nicely on my bedroom wall as is.

That was one of my last major wants. The last major want now is a 4-way that I can find well below market value (for example, say $100-200). I don't mind being patient.

Yeah, I decided very quickly "ah the hell with it, it's a rare opportunity and the price is still really good *click*"

Congrats, nice sign.

Many of the embossed NY State Route signs came pre-punched for the NY style mini-cateyes and a backplate, but were never actually fitted with them. You can usually tell by looking at the back and if it had them, you'll be able to tell right off.

If you want to add cateyes you're going to have to continue to be patient. NY used a peculiar size of cateye that was unique to NY and is subsequently much more difficult to come by. They're out there but are hard to find.

You know what, I'm guessing it didn't have the backplate or cateyes. There's no outline/scars/scratches/indents/whatever where it would've been and the wear is consistent all over. I guess that's good, I'll keep it as is as I could put my time and efforts towards something else.

Even if it lacks its original marbles, then it still looks quite nice.

I did not see this on EBay; however, it seems like you bought it for a bargain. In any case, congratulations on the acquisition.

Just out of curiosity, is there a crack right next to the 2 in "25?"
