Traffic Signal newbie w/ Eagle EF20 questions

Postby jeepguy61 on Tue Jan 22, 2013 2:35 pm

Hi all,

I joined this group because over the years I have been given 2 Eagle EF20 controllers by Chillicothe Ohio dept of streets when they switched to microprocessor based controllers. This is my first attempt at making any type of signal controller operational. I have a single red/yellow/green traffic signal that I would like to control in the garage.

I have looked at the ef20 schematics on Mediafire that someone kindly posted, and I have run single phase AC to the controller and gotten the timer dial to come alive, but the cams do not do anything. I seem to remember a year or 2 ago when I was lurking here that someone had posted a quick hook-up diagram to control a simple single-head signal. Does anyone else remember where that might be?

Thanks! John

Welcome, I'm sure that someone here will be able to answer your question.

I don't know a whole lot about this type of controller, but you might check to see if it is in "flash" or "manual" mode. The cam will not advance if this is the case.

Welcome to the forums, John.

Does the drum (on the dial timer) rotate? Are there dial keys present? As Mark mentioned, the signal controller is perhaps not in the "AUTO" position. I would check to see on the backpanel.

I am not familiar with the Eagle EF-20, but there are a couple of people here on the forums that may provide additional assistance.

:pics!:

But seriously, if you can post some pictures of the inside of the cabinet, then we might be able to tell you if you're missing something...may be missing a relay or something else.

Do you have a cabinet or are you just wiring to the connector on the controller? I can draw a sketch and email it to you if its just the controller.

I emailed the schematic. Besides the switches in the cabinet, note that cam impulse runs through the jumpers on the inside of the controller door. You need the dial transfer relays plugged in or the jumpers in place to get the cam to advance. Two contacts on the dial will advance the cam. The outside set is the normal set and only works if the 2nd contact on the cam is closed. The next set on the dial (release key - green) should always advance the cam. Cam advance goes through the transfer relays as noted then goes to the M1, is jumpered back on the M2 post to the cam.

Here's a shot of the controller jumpers needed. Dial motor power and impulse run through them. If your dial turns, this may not be the issue.

Hi Joe!

I have been on the road for the last week and couldnt try your suggestions but got home this morning and rushed out with your schematics and wiring suggestions.... IT WORKED!!!! I actually was given 2 indentical EF20's from the street department her in Chillicothe and low and behold, both of them fired up Timer running, cams clunking and advancing... I just stood back in awe!!!

Anyway, I will give them a good cleaning and start hooking one up to a Eagle single head signal I bought at a antique shop a few years ago so I can hang the setup in my garage. I cant thank everyone enough for the help!!!

Take care, John
