As was already mentioned, the short visors had normally faced a curb of a street. They generally protected the entire traffic signal itself from being clipped by a large vehicle, such as a truck, for example.

The one that I remember was a 1960s Marbelite four-way. It had only one pair of short visors that faced a crosswalk/curb. Forget where exactly in Queens it was located at.

Where curbside installation cases visors to be damaged by passing vehicles, the Marflex visor will snap back into shape

After flying off the signal and bouncing on the curb. ;)

I've seen regular signals in New York with extremely short tunnel visors for the same reason...

Jersey had a habit of just losing the visor completely on those signals too close to the curb.

If only those truckers knew how to drive.

It's not the truckers, it's the municipalities that put the signals too close to the curb... :glare:

The four-way in the picture has the blackout lenses!

A ped pole set back 12" from the curb and 16" arms + 10" long visors =
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.
