Today I got a video and some pictures of one of these OVERHEIGHT - STOP flashing signs for a 10' RR bridge at 14th St & University Ave.
This setup hasn't worked well for as long as I can remember. Most of the time when a city bus goes under, the alarm goes off, even though the buses fit. Because of that, they are often just ignored.
There are sensors that have lasers across the road, (supposedly) a little less than 10 feet up. When an over height truck breaks the beam, it sets off the alarm.
I know where the sensors are but didn't get pictures. I also sent an email asking that the age and brand of the sign/system.
In the videos I caught the sign on the west side of the bridge going off twice. One time it was a usual false alarm (with a bus), and the other was with a garbage truck that had to turn around.
The west side sign had the OVERHEIGHT STOP section burnt out. The sign on the east side has all of the lights working. I did not get a video of that one though; It was never set off while I was there and I didn't have time to wait.
Just listen to the bell in the video, and you can tell how bad it is. It and the sign need maintenance. The east side sign & bell seem better, just seeing the non-rusty bell and the (fully) functioning sign.
The pictures and videos are all bad quality, because today was a terrible day for pictures (the sky really looked like it does in them!). I will get better ones and a video of the other side soon.
