In my opinion, all of those extra green and red indications are a waste. There should just be only a digital board right above the three-section traffic signal.

I had the opportunity to go to Brazil in 1991. I wish I had taken pics of the signals when I was there! :doh:

Countdown signals to get ready for the green have been prohibited by the MUTCD since 1961.

The new 2009 MUTCD now prohibits a countdown before the yellow at the main signal. A signal mounted upstream can warn of a red signal and signal about to change to red.
