Got My First Signal, Tell me how to Pole Mount it!

Postby adamfishercox on Sat Jul 20, 2013 6:59 pm

I've finally gotten a signal, an Eagle flatback with all original semaphore lenses. I'll need some help dating it and other stuff later on, but for now need some basic advice on how to pole mount it. It has a slipfitter on it. I was thinking of using PVC piping for the main pole (good idea/bad idea?) but I have no idea where to get something that can act as a base. Doesn't have to be real hardware, as this will be indoors and the pole mostly hidden, but it needs to be a sturdy base and have a hole or hatch that I can thread the plug through. Where do I look?

Better pictures coming soon, but here's one for now to give an idea what I'm dealing with:

Circa 1960s or 1970s, I think...

You could probably fashion a wooden box as a base.

Nice light
4" PVC with a wood box would work.
At Home Depot they have electrical cords with the plug only (Husky sku #600-237) that work well with a Lights to Go or similar controller :hello:

If you go with PVC I'd run some 2x4's or a 4x4 inside the pole for stiffness and strength.

Thanks for the suggestions! If I did eventually want to find actual hardware, at least for the base, is it just up to finding it in a scrap yard, craigslist or ebay, or are there any places that make this stuff available to the public?

Here's the finished (for now) product! Probably going to add a "Push to cross" sign, and will be getting a sequencer this week!

Hi Adam,

Awesome you have a light that came with a slip fitter. Cool old hot water radiator in your collection!

Cheers!

Thanks, it was definitely a great addition that basically required I use a pole. And the radiator is actually just part of the house! But it fits in nicely!
