Quebec Signals

Postby signalkid1 on Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:32 pm

Hey all!

Today, I was looking through my road photos from my Montreal, QC trip during the summer of 2008, and I noticed something odd about how Transports Quebec installs thier signals. They use different shapes! They obviously do this to help the color blind, since most overhead signals installed by Transports Quebec are horizontal. Red is a square, yellow is a diamond, and green is the standard circle. Here is a photo of mine that shows it on red (taken on QC 132 at QC 209 in Saint-Constant):

Is there anywhere else in the world that uses different shapes for lenses? Because now that I have seen my photos again, Quebec is the only place I know of that uses these shapes, and it would be interesting to hear of other places using them.

Quebec does a lot of things differently:

- Their version of our left turn arrow is to flash the green signal. Of course, if this is done, only the single lead, single lag, lead-lag, or unsplit lead-lag (split phase) are possible.

- In the 1960s, a green arrow required all traffic to turn from the street in the direction indicated. I think this has been changed.

I don't know of any other country using shapes for the RAG indecations in general, but obviously shapes for LRT, Rapid Trans. and Movements is commonplace.

Its also interesting to note the twin-end red aspects.

There might be a handful of signals that use the shapes in Prince Edward Island. Don't quote me on that, but I think this may be the case. And some PEI signals look like Quebec signals.

There are indeed some of these signals on PEI, and in New Brunswick as well.
