ok, so where did the chicken come from? Who/where is the creator of the doghouse?

Better question, when did they first begin to appear?

My guess is when the SOB started stinking to the point that it had to go. :stink:

The first Doghouse I saw in CT was in 1990. I heard they started in CA.

I saw my first doghouse in 1981. But it was on a signal with split phasing on that street, so I didn't think much of it. Most of the left turn signals were exclusively protected at the time.

I investigated the use of a yellow arrow to prevent yellow trap, and concluded that it could not.

Who/where is the creator of the doghouse?

Doghouse, what's a doghouse? Just kidding, but here's my perspective. We've never gotten a doghouse in Tacoma, we opted for inline 5s instead. Our first protected/permissive head was installed at N 26th & Pearl on 10/18/89.

I remember seeing them here on LI as early as the early 80's. I almost lost my mind the first time I saw a 3M doghouse but they weren't around very long. :(
Moderately inspirational message.

I can show you one in Pelham, NY, if we do another Westchester signal hunt.. It's shown on the MSN site...

The earliest I remember seeing a doghouse is 1983, though there were probably some before that. The earliest signals I know of with the left turns protected by a green and yellow arrow were from the early 1970's..these were all five section 12" signals, as if the doghouse concept was unknown at the time.

The city of White Plains, NY has been converting many of its doghouses with bi-modal LED's in the GA section; the YA section is just abandoned in place... :glare:

By the way, the formal term for a doghouse, seen in some signal catalogs, is cluster.

Can't speak for many other states, but Delaware was probably one of the first states to experiment with doghouses. The first doghouses were installed around the 1960s or so, being Eagle flatbacks. Major thoroughfares had the usual 12" doghouse while more minor intersections had these "big head" doghouses where the red section was 12" whole the rest were 8":

New Jersey IIRC started around the 1980s, because there is one intersection in Fort Lee with Econolite button backs:

Today, New Jersey hates doghouses, most new protected/permissive heads are 4 section 12"ers with a yellow/green bimodal arrow on the bottom.

New Hampshire hates the whole protected/permissive signal idea. Few intersections within the state have them. Rhode Island hates doghouses. Most intersections with protected/permissive heads are the 4 section 12"ers with a yellow/green bimodal arrow on the bottom, like New Jersey likes. In Pennsylvania (at least in the Philadelphia area), the doghouse is a fairly new thing. Many of the 4 section 12" R-Y-G-GA protected/permissive signals are still alive, many being 2nd generation Durasigs.
