French Pedestrian Signal Patterns

French Pedestrian Signal Patterns

How do French pedestrian signals usually operate? Do they just switch back and forth between red and green man? Do they have a dark period in between? Do they flash?

From memory, they flash the green man before returning to red, but don't quote me on that, it's been a while since I was last in France.

Unless it has been changed since I've been to Europe in 1998, the green man flashes for the ped clearence. The same went for Belguim and the Netherlands

With the French pedestrian signals, history shows the WALK usually works perfect until trouble or war shows up, and then they run.

If my notes serve me correctly, this is the same pattern that is the modern style in Sweden and UK/Ireland's Standard Cycle Pelican Crossing.

It may very well be. From experience, though, other EU countries tend to have the flash rate quite a bit higher than ours, almost like a blink (I think it's because the lamp is lit for shorter time than it's off during the flash cycle, whereas ours are equal on/off times).
