Does this go back to the porthole era's? Were early CH/GE's designed for 60-70 watt bulbs, or did they take 30-40 watt bulbs? I'd imagine a 1930's bulb produced a lot less light than a 1950's bulb.

Larry makes an interesting point. We are restoring a very early 1900s street car signal and found an original Edison style bulb marked "GE SIGNAL". Its around 40 watts and it still works! I am assuming these bulbs were used in traffic signals as well?

This topic (coupled with insomnia) lead me to two questions:

One: Aside from the 3M, am I the only one here who's actually crazy enough to use traffic signal bulbs in their display? My 8" lenses currently use 69W and 12" use 116W traffic bulbs obtained locally from Platt Electric.

Two: On the subject of the 3M, do those bulbs have any sort of farewell 'pop' or other noise that they make when they fail? Or do they simply go quietly into that good night?

At the moment, I only have two incandescent signals, and I'm *not* using traffic bulbs in them. However, that's because I don't *have* any. If I did, I would be using them!

Can't say, haven't seen one die yet. :)

I try to keep the sum of all of my lights on at no more than 150 watts total at a time, it makes things easier for my relays and it keeps my parents from getting pissy over the power consumption. However, I'm in the process of setting them all up in the garage which has 30-amp electricity, so things may change. :Wink2:

My 8" signals have 69 watt traffic signal bulbs. I can get them from my friendly neighborhood lighting store.

I was using all 60 and 69W traffic lamps, but have now *slowly* downgraded to 40W ceiling fan bulbs. The 3M has the 150 watt monsters in it until they fail..over 10 years with the same bulbs, then it will be converted to LED.

I have a few home depot LED bulbs intermixed too. The Dont Walk section of the 9 inch ped and the green of the Eaglelux.

Then of course there are the signals designed for or using actual traffic LED fixtures.

67W bulbs in the 8" sections, 1950L in the red section, and a bimodal GE LED module in the arrow section.
