New countdown unit added!

Postby EPAC-EPIC-MARC on Thu Aug 22, 2013 7:26 pm

Some of you know my countdown pedestrian signal fixture that I've had for 5 or 6 years had some segments go bad recently.

Normally I'm not a fan...in fact I avoid ebay for reasons I'm not going to get into here (I'm sure most of you know what those reasons are). But I happened to notice a neat countdown light that I haven't seen for sale anywhere else.

So instead of making an account, and paypal and all that, Jerry was nice enough to grab the Buy it now and I paid him cash directly...especially since the auction had 3 or 4 "watchers"

The only way I'll get on ebay with an account is if I see an Intelight NEMA show up...but anyways here are some pictures and a video..

The new unit is made by Excellence Optoelectronics (EOI) and the the indications are much nicer on this than the original Quixote unit which is sitting disconnected next to it.

Some videos...first of my original countdown just before I pulled it. The segments burnt out

And here is the new one operating

Thanks guys!

One thing I did notice is there isn't a partial outline of the symbol that isn't lit. On the older module you could see the outline of a partially lit man symbol in orange when the hand was lit and vice versa for when the man was lit Hard to explain, it wasn't really a flaw but it visually looked a little weird. This new module is much better at only showing one full symbol at a time.

The old module will have a future in my cousin's son's bedroom. It won't function like before, but I will put a power cord and switch on it so it goes back and forth between symbols. He's two years old and loves seeing my signals when him and my cousin come over.

The one thing I did notice about this EOI is that the hand tends to flash at a high slightly erratic pace for the first couple cycles before stabilizing to a proper flash rate to learn the countdown. It takes longer but eventually gets there.

Perhaps my eyes are playing tricks on me, but is the new one brighter than the other one?

Also, was in use on the street before you acquired it? Just curious.

Its about the same in brightness as the old one. The symbols are slightly larger though. The unit was used, it has some scuffing on it but nothing major

Thats cool Nick! EOI seems to be one of the more obscure brands of LEDs out there; the only EOI LEDs that I have seen in person was an 8 inch set at :Phil:'s at Signalpalooza 2013.

Is the new module completely silent during operation? I remember you saying that the Quixote module made a buzzing/thumping sound when the hand was flashing, and mine does the same thing... probably a transformer.

I like the EOI LEDs, the way they light up.

Yeah the Quixote model made thumping sounds when the hand flashed. This one is nice and silent. It does flash someone fast when its first powered up which makes it hard for it to learn the cycle to count down. I think the hand electronics need time to warm up because it stablizes and counts correctly when the hand is on steady for about 3 minutes
