Old Conneticut Hwy. Sign

Postby steven1981 on Fri Sep 27, 2013 12:03 am

Today, while at one of his stops, my father came across this old highway sign. He made an offer to the elderly man that wanted to throw it in a dumpster, and he gave it to him for $10.

My father showed me the sign a while back, and it looks quite nice. It is labeled as "CONN. 69," and the sign itself is entirely made of wood, in which I would assume this is quite old. Below, is one picture of what the front looks like.

Also, what's interesting about the back is that, even though it is practically blank (painted green), there is an etching in the wood that reads "CONN HIGHWAY DEPT."

We're considering to sell the highway sign, since I lack an interest in it. Though before we do so, I am curious as to how old it is, not to mention if there is a general history behind this kind of highway sign that the state of Connecticut once used.

That sign is from the 40s-50s...appears to be a 14"er..a few of them were still hanging into the late 80s but were rapidly displaced by aluminum signs at that point. I have a few similar signs in vintage as well as age. Would certainly be interested in taking it off your hands if you do decide to sell....i still have an interest in fine Connecticut wood....

Thank you for the information. Interesting to know that rather brief background. It is quite small, too; however, I do not know the exact dimensions at the moment. I'll measure it later.

I will keep you in mind if I decide to sell it. As of now, my father and I are contemplating. We'll play it by ear.
