Econolite E/M Controller

EM, NEMA, whatever - if it controls a traffic signal, you can talk about it here.

The configurations of the cams that are depicted in that cam chart were used at basic two-phase signalized intersections throughout New York City for many years, and they were never changed.

What I mentioned in one comment that was in regards to my suggestion is that the signalized intersection that I remember is from my hometown, which is Staten Island (one of the five boroughs of New York City). That said, the cams at the signalized intersection were exactly configured as shown on the cam chart (even though the cam chart came from a different signalized intersection in New York City).

At the signalized intersection I remember, "R1, A1, and G1" were what represented the main street. "R2, A2, and G2" were what represented the protected left turn traffic signals on the main street, and they were considered as the cross street, actually. A simple two-phase signalized intersection here. Pedestrian signals were, of course, also here. They were used for both phases, and, they, too, were configured the same way as in the cam chart.

You could configure your cams as the cams are configured on the chart, or you could slightly adjust the lengths of the signal intervals. Doesn't have to be the same.

I know that this would NOT work for a "real" intersection but at least it would cycle my doghouse configured signal. I want to use the last two available circuits in the chart below, to cycle the green and yellow arrows. I will tie the doghouse to my other main street RYG signal. I have 2 intervals that there are no changes made to the signals, that would be step 2 and 8.

Couldn't I connect the left turn green arrow to circuit 15, interval 1
and the yellow to circuit 16, interval 2???

Yes, that would work. Actually a good idea because it won't change the rest of the cam and it will remain "street legal".

I kind of thought that was your major concern with my previous questions, but I forgot to mention that it was a doghouse configuration earlier..... :rob:

Now I'm just waiting for the new cam's and contacts to arrive.

Thank you and Steven for your help and thoughts!!! :good:

Ok everyone, next question:

How do you connect a ped button to an E/M controller???

Thanks again,
Mark

You pretty much don't. The reason being is that there is only one set of cams on the shaft and they can't change on the fly. We have actuated controllers that basically dwell on the main street and wait for a side street car or ped. Then the cam advances through the side street but the ped will be displayed even if it was only veh actuated (only one cam).

We have two ways of doing it. It it is not coordinated the easy way is to open the dial motor circuit and have the veh/ped close a relay and start things turning. If the intersection is coordinated you can't stop the dial because you would loose sync so the method is to open the cam re-sync circuit so that the dial continues around but the cam doesn't advance. And again, the veh/ped closes a relay and lets the cam advance.

Hey all,

As my signal collection grows, I am wondering how many signals can safely be connected to this controller? I guess the correct question would be, what is the recommended maximum wattage/load per circuit on these controllers?

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the link to that thread, seems like there were several opinions that came to a conclusion that 1200 watts is the max for that controller.

Question answered
