Read an interesting book, "Electro-Matic Vehicle Actuated Road Signals" chronicling the company's 25 year history in the business. It starts with the basic two phase intersection and runs through adding phases and overlaps to provide early cut-off or late start of a phase.
Basic timing is discussed including volume density, coordination, and priority for special vehicles. One feature that caught my eye was "conditional red clearance" which can omit the red clearance when it is not needed such as when a phase gaps out.
Also included was their line of pedestrian and vehicles detectors. One that I picked up on was a contact closure assembly mounted on the line to pick up a trolley. They had signal heads, mounting hardware and terminal assemblies.
I should add that the book was written by the Automatic Telephone & Electric Co in 1957 and starts with a photo of the turn-on ceremony of the first "Electro-matic" signal installation in Europe on March 14th 1932.
