Tinted or Clear?

Postby 3Mfanatic on Thu Sep 12, 2013 2:58 am

We all know that every jurisdiction likes to spec their LED lenses differently. The City of Portland prefers all-tinted lenses while we know New York State likes only the red to be tinted with yellow and green being clear but what I want to know is what you prefer. If you ran a city or county signal shop and it was up to you to make the call, how would motorists in your area see their LEDs?

Personally, I like all-tinted lenses although an all-clear look is pretty slick and modern, too but only in new signals. I don't know why but on an inline-5 section right turn signal, I like them all to be tinted except the green arrow. That just looks neat to me.

All clear especially with most LED's being the "incandescent type" now with a cone on the back. They suffer from sunphantom as bad or worse than most incandescent signals.

All 3 colors tinted gets my vote except for the Intelights. Those get clear...the optional tinted lenses look strange in them.

I tend to find all-tinted more aesthetically pleasing, though I don't mind the green being clear for practical reasons (as seems to be the common practice where I live).

Just curious, what do clear and tinted LEDs look like?
I am a railfan, signalfan, and I'm interested in tornado sirens. I hope to learn new things about traffic lights because I'm interested in them and don't know much about them.

Here is an example of clear. The red is tinted red, but you can't tell because it is on.

Are these tinted or a different type of LED light? Sorry, I don't know much about the Different types of LED lights.
(I'd recommend clicking on them to make them larger.)
