The Eagle lanterns on that school crossing which has the cranked arm: they're mounted to AWA-Plessey columns - would this have been the original arrangement, or would there have been Tins on here originally?
Not sure, but it seems likely. I think most of the tin signals were replaced by the end of the 1970s - if not earlier. So probably replaced by the Eagles around that time.

The road would've been wider when the signals were installed. At many crossings, the roads get narrowed for 1 or two parking spaces either side to make the crossing safer. This is because it makes it a bit more obvious when people are about to cross the road. Also prevents people parking on or near the crossing. But sometimes you get these instances where signals were already installed and they leave them beside the former kerbing.
But of course the road is the full width on the approaches and the signals are just as visible as they were before the crossing area was narrowed. So no real urgency to spend money to move them.
