Vintage Australian Signals photos

After a long period of inactivity on my website "Signspotters" Australian sign and signal gallery, I have finally got back to work on updating the site - starting, of course, with the Traffic Signals pages.

I have made a couple of trips to Melbourne recently, for the purposes of seeking out the older signals still in use. many of them are by the Eagle Signal Company of Australia. LED upgrades are proceeding rapidly, so these early signals are unlikely to be in use much longer, thus the urgency to record them now.

I have also included a number of controller photos for those so interested.

I'll add some more photos of that one soon. I do have others showing what all those indications are for.

Some really fantastistic stuff here. I think a Victoria/Australian Signal Meet is in order.

If you should ever again come across another one of those neon peds, please know, I am very interested. Thanks for sharing all this awesomeness! :good:

No problem. I'm out to record as much of this awesomeness as practical, before it's all gone for good.

As for the Australian Eagle neon ped signals - Not impossible, but be warned now, that it is quite unlikely. They've never been easy to get - and now that there's probably less than 30 still in service and likely more people than that in Victoria who'd like one, you can see where the problem lies. :beg:

I appreciate the whole red and white striped theme is for a reason, and I like it, but it just looks even funkier with yellow lanterns and black backing boards!

The Eagle lanterns on that school crossing which has the cranked arm: they're mounted to AWA-Plessey columns - would this have been the original arrangement, or would there have been Tins on here originally?

Also, the Rathmines Road school ped crossing - how far back are those columns from the road?! I assume when replaced, they'll place them close to the kerb for the multitude of reasons associated with putting the button and lanterns actually by the road?

Not sure, but it seems likely. I think most of the tin signals were replaced by the end of the 1970s - if not earlier. So probably replaced by the Eagles around that time.

The road would've been wider when the signals were installed. At many crossings, the roads get narrowed for 1 or two parking spaces either side to make the crossing safer. This is because it makes it a bit more obvious when people are about to cross the road. Also prevents people parking on or near the crossing. But sometimes you get these instances where signals were already installed and they leave them beside the former kerbing.
But of course the road is the full width on the approaches and the signals are just as visible as they were before the crossing area was narrowed. So no real urgency to spend money to move them.

Have added some more vintage signal photos to the site today. I visited a site in Melbourne yesterday that had 2 early Eagle signals plus 2 very rare 12" AWA / Plessey "tin" signals. They're the only two I've ever seen as it happens, and they're still operating. For how much longer I don't know.
4 vintage signals in total. All the others were polys. And this is only about a mile from the city centre.

See the pics at the bottom of this page http://www.signspotters.hobbiesplus.com.au/traffic_signals.htm

Enjoy!
