Walking on Broadway in 1968

Postby steven1981 on Sat Sep 21, 2013 7:26 pm

For those of you that are interested, then you're in for a treat. A while back, on YouTube, I came across a video that is solely made up of still pictures, in which they were taken in New York City in 1968. The video is about 25 minutes long, and the person that created this first starts at the Brooklyn Bridge, and then he enters lower Manhattan, in where he changes direction and walks north on Broadway. He eventually ends up in Central Park.

From 3:49 to around 10:01, each intersection on Broadway at this time had undeveloped signalized intersections, in which still used two-section traffic signals. Some of them from Ruleta, while others from Marbelite. You could also see some overlaps as well. It is interesting to see that these were still in service on that portion of Broadway, since other signalized intersections in the video were already upgraded to pedestrian signals and three-section traffic signals.

Aside from the traffic signals, you could also see some vintage N.Y.C. signage, such as the beige Manhattan porcelain street signs. Enjoy the video.

Very interesting!! Weird to see the post-top clusters, Ruletas and mast-arm Marbs in consecutive fashion.

Detroit also has a period during the late 40s through mid 50s where you could see Tokheim single-faces and 4-ways, Eaglelux/GE overheads and intersections with ped signals.

It was common to see traffic signal clusters on pedestals throughout the boroughs in New York City for a fairly long period of time. Even though the mast-arm/guy wire set-up made its debut there around 1954 or so, the pedestal set-up was still fairly popular at the time.

New York City had an interesting arrangement of signal configurations at intersections, and what I mean by this is that it was fairly common to use a mast-arm/guy wire set-up along with a pedestal in various locations, in which I like quite a lot. I have some memories of a few signalized intersections that shared such a unique set-up; however, many were altered throughout the years, and most, if not all, today use two mast-arm/guy wire configurations, which is the typical set-up. Very few signalized intersections still have solely pedestals dedicated for traffic signals nowadays.

At 8:40 is a 2-section RG. Nice find. Love this old footage!
Peace!

There are plenty of them on the first portion of Broadway in lower Manhattan, in which could be viewed in the beginning of the video.
